“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I found myself thinking about Ralph Waldo Emerson as I prepared to write this post. His concept of self-discovery involved getting away and spending time alone with nature, believing in the interconnectedness of everything and our existence as part of the creator. According to Emerson, by disconnecting from vanity and ego in the solitude of nature, you can connect with your true self.

I share a similar perspective on self-discovery. Taking time alone is crucial to understanding who you are beyond societal roles, such as your job, relationships, material wealth, or religious affiliations.

When I graduated from college, I felt lost. Despite the expected sense of achievement, I couldn’t share in the joy of my family. I realized I didn’t know who I was or why I pursued a bachelor’s in chemistry. Graduation brought relief but forced me to confront the uncertainty of my life’s direction.

Who determines who you are, and when are you supposed to figure that out? I believe discovering yourself is important to be able to recognize your gifts and figure out how to contribute to the world.
